Back to School
01.05.07 (11:47 am) [edit]
I registered for one math class and two music lessons back at my old college, so once I cut them a check, I'm officially back to school! I pretty happy about it. I think I should have mixed feelings, but right now I'm just pretty happy.
I wish I could take more classes, but I only have so much time to give to this. I am&nbs p;taking a pian o lesson and&nb sp;a voice less on. I'd like to sign up for the Jazz ensemble, the chamber music ensemble-- though I'm 99% sure the teacher only wants violins and violas and such and not guitars--, bass lessons and guitar.
The guitar teachers are both filled up with lessons and I'm on the waiting list for the classical guitar teacher. I could do the bass, but I have till February. I can fit those into my schedule, so I really don't have a reason not to take the lessons. The Jazz ensemble ends too late for me and my other commitments, but if I can swing a few things around then I'll be there.
The math class I'm taking is "Probability and Statistics", and I probably should be afraid of this one. As I look at the text book, I dont' remeber any of the Calculus I need to do this stuff. I've go some studying to do before i go back. I might even sign up for tutoring my first week back just to get back on it.
Hopefully this cold I'm still fighting will be over by the time school starts. It should. I'd like to get back to the gym sometime soon, but I've been still too sick to go.
later peeps,

I think it's great that you're going back to school! Hopefully the math class won't be too difficult.

Thanks! I think I'll do alright. I've been away from it for a long time though. Once I knock the "rust" off my math chops I should be alright. I'm going over my old calculus stuff this weekend. I saved all my notes and books from school. I got A's in both Calc semesters I took, so I should be OK, once the rust is off.

You're welcome! If you got all A's before I bet it won't be nearly as hard for ya--just developing the study habits again for me would be the hardest.

statistics make me want to poke myself in the eye! ;) but, I'm
sure you'll be great! I'm just not very talented in math.
Wow, you are quite the musician! :o) Very cool! Maybe you can take the jazz ensemble next semester?
Good Luck and Way to Go!!

I think stats will make me want to poke my eyes out too. I loved Calculus, but hated sampling plans and that stuff as an environmental consultant which is the closest I came to stats in my life.
My wife is predicting I'll be bored to death by it.
Thank you for the kind words. I might be able to fit in the ensemble. It would be a good chance to network with the teacher, who I'm hoping is a gigging musician and not just some academic.

Those Bastards! Not to call you a bastard, I say "those" instead.
Sometimes that is the best show on TV.

my oldest is nine and I'd like to watch some of them with her. Do you regret letting them watch any episodes? I'm a bit of a prude with my kids, but I want them to be as hip as can be. I'm kinda close to trying to play "out" with my oldest in a piano/guitar thing or something in coffee houses etc.

Very cool. I know the Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode you're refering to, I liked that one a lot actually for the absurdity. I also loved the boondocks, the whole season just about but especially the Christmas episode.
I take them to very political events and discuss with them big issues, trying to keep it on an Ideas and events level (using the Eleanor Roosevelt great minds talk ideas average minds talk events small minds talk about people), and characterizing "dissing" of any individual political figure (whom may or may not be "w") as either immature or just pointless for my kids to think about because by the time the're older he'll be out of the picture.
With Science I go right to real stuff that going on right now (global warming, or anything) for their projects and guide them or re-direct them (well "her" the oldest right now) though the deep stuff only when needed.
Same with math, I make sure they see the biggest possible picture and to that end I'm going to start talking to them about the probability course I'm taking. The'll get it.
As for the culture stuff I've been reluctant to expose them too, the time will come because they'll be out playing music with me if I can set up the situations for that to happen, and all kinds of stuff happens then.
Well, we're off to the kids chess club tonight.
catch you later,
